The Island Closing (Theater and Galleries) The Short List (Theater)

When: Wednesdays-Sundays. Continues through March 7 2010

Athol Fugard's 1972 drama, about two black cellmates at South Africa's notorious Robben Island prison, gets a muted but skillful staging from James Bohnen for Remy Bumppo. An overlong pantomime depicting the pair at their Sisyphean daily tasks almost derails the energy at the start, and there are one or two points in the script that come dangerously close to preachifying. But Kamal Angelo Bolden and LaShawn Banks deliver tough, nuanced portrayals of men trying to walk through hell without losing their souls. Victoria DeIorio's sound design and J.R. Lederle's lighting add subtle but crafty details to this stark, heartfelt tale. --Kerry Reid
