The Jade Tiger

This 1977 kung fu epic by Hong Kong writer-director Chu Yuan seems intent on confounding the viewer's expectations, but beneath all the double- and triple-crosses lies a sobering antiwar movie. Ti Lung, one of the more durable action heroes of the 70s and 80s, plays a high-ranking member of the Zhao clan, which is embroiled in a hundred-year war with the wicked Tang. After his father is beheaded, Ti sets out on a journey of revenge, aware that he may either die or not return for many years. Shot entirely on soundstages, this is notable for its claustrophobia, which may or may not be intentional. In Mandarin with subtitles. 101 min.
