When: Fri., July 23, 6-8 p.m. 2010
Between 1957 and 1965, photographer W. Eugene Smith recorded 4,000 hours of tape and shot tens of thousands of photographs of the hundreds of jazz musicians who gathered at his Manhattan loft after-hours to jam. The Jazz Loft Project: W. Eugene Smith in NYC, 1957-1965, an exhibition of Smith’s work, includes 186 of the photos and a listening station with 45 of the recordings. The show opened July 17, but tonight’s the official reception. Documentarian Sam Stephenson, whose book The Jazz Loft Project (Knopf) was the catalyst for both the exhibition and a radio series on New York’s WNYC, gives a gallery talk August 26.
