The Jesus Trip

An outlaw motorcycle gang, pursued by policemen who'd rather kill them than take them alive, seize a pretty nun as their hostage and head for the Mexican border. This 1971 exploitation movie openly steals from several contemporaneous releases--the countercultural bikers recall Easy Rider, the psychosexual tension Don Siegel's The Beguiled, the climactic shoot-out Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid--yet it manages to create a vibe of its own, as if it were shot in between beers during a camping trip. Director Russ Mayberry (a lifelong TV man whose career stretched from The Monkees to Matlock) sets an agreeably laid-back pace, and the understated cast is pleasant to watch.
