The K of D: An Urban Legend | A Red Orchid Theatre | Theater & Performance | Chicago Reader

The K of D: An Urban Legend Closing (Theater and Galleries) Member Picks The Short List (Theater)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through July 12 2009

Laura Schellhardt's urban legend takes place, as its wry narrator notes, where most urban legends do: in a rural area. Saint Marys, Ohio, is a real place, but in Schellhardt's hands it feels like something rust-belt bard Richard Russo might cook up for the House Theatre of Chicago. A young girl loses her voice and gains a supernatural gift when her twin brother is killed by a redneck villain, causing her friends to seek revenge on her behalf. Gwendolyn Whiteside is goofy, engaging, and empathetic playing all of the roles in this Route 66 Theatre Company production--especially the kids--and she receives a great assist from Lindsay Jones's terrific sound design. But Schellhardt dilutes the sad and gritty power of this ghost story with too many self-conscious writerly detours. --Kerry Reid
