The Kid

Unlike many supernatural stories about adults who get to relive their childhoods, this somewhat sober fantasy doesn't waste a lot of time trying to make plausible the mechanism by which a 40-year-old meets the 8-year-old kid he used to be. And unlike most characters having a fantastical experience, who become convinced it's real and spend much of the plot trying to persuade others they're not crazy, Russ (Bruce Willis) continually denies the evidence of his senses—which only enhances the poignancy of his encounter with young Rusty (Spencer Breslin). Vigilant viewers may spend many of the 101 minutes searching for holes in the plot, but I was busy being moved by the premise and the filmmakers' confidence in the power of their metaphor: a little boy who's disappointed in the man he grew up to be. Jon Turteltaub directed a screenplay by Audrey Wells.
