The Last Big Thing

A compelling relationship drama is hidden in this stylishly sluggish, self-referential, and theme-heavy story about a self-appointed cultural critic who may be as pretentious as the poseurs he's out to unmask. The smug Simon pretends he's started an underground magazine so he can interview slightly famous people and tell them their aspirations are stupid. His behavior appeals to Darla, a closet collector of 70s TV-show lunch boxes, who records her observations about him on a conspicuously placed PowerBook. Simon, who's incensed by the references to 70s television he finds everywhere, agrees to live in the cookie-cutter house her father has bought them, partly because he imagines its ordinariness to be ironic. Written and directed by Dan Zukovic, who plays Simon; with Susan Heimbinder.
