The Last Mall Santa The Short List (Theater) Image Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Fridays. Continues through Dec. 26 2014

This show from Under the Gun Theater doesn't know whether it should be offering commentary on the overcommercialization of Christmas or making asides about the state of things in the life of an overworked, underpaid playwright. Instead it generously whacks you over the head with both. Set in the "future," the show follows two orphans living in an age dominated by Amazon who long to bring back the good old days when men sat in malls dressed as Santa. There are two major problems here—one the show’s own smugness, the other its relentlessness in crusading against corporate tyranny, which in the end leaves little room for moments of actual comedy and enjoyment. —Chloe Riley
