The Last of the Dragons The Short List (Theater) Recommended Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Saturdays, Sundays. Continues through Feb. 21 2010

On opening day many of the elements of this production of a new musical based on Edith Nesbit’s children’s story--about a swashbuckling princess, her more bookish suitor, and the dragon they set off to slay--had not snapped into place. Some of the actors seemed underrehearsed, and several could barely croak their way through the songs by Mikhail Fiksel, Kyle Hamman, and Alex Balestrieri. But it hardly mattered. The story is strong, the characters are interesting, and the committed leads--Anne Sears and Scott Allen Luke--made their fairy-tale characters real to the intended audience. The production features some wonderful stage effects, including a huge puppet dragon. The hourlong show flew past, and my eight-year-old daughter chattered about it the rest of the day. --Jack Helbig
