The Last Supper

Political allegory from Cuba, directed by Tomas Gutierrez Alea (1977). An 18th-century plantation owner invites 12 of his slaves to join him for a Good Friday dinner, stretching the bounds of unconscious irony to their absolute limit. Alea's essay on Christian idealism undercut by capitalist reality isn't up to his earlier Memories of Underdevelopment—it's too schematic and a little too obvious at times. Still, it's a very handsome production, photographed in lush capitalist color. In Spanish with subtitles. 110 min.
