The League of Awesome The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Fridays-Sundays. Continues through Aug. 21 2010

There are many near-awesome moments in Corri Feuerstein and Sara Sevigny's new comedy about five hard-drinking, Spandex-wearing superheroines, but the script could use a super editor. It would help, for instance, to know more about the specific nature of the quintet's powers, since that's half the fun of spoofing the genre. The League is temporarily out of enemies having imprisoned their arch-nemesis, the depression-inducing SorrowMaker (a pitch-perfect Dan Granata) in a Hardy Boys mystery. Once he's unleashed, though, and joins forces with a manners-obsessed ass-kicker called Ms. Great (Sara Gorsky), the action picks up considerably. The more understated performances tend to register the biggest laughs in Matt Engle's Factory Theater production--especially Wm Bullion's turn as Gladys, the homeless narrator. --Kerry Reid
