The Legend of Sleepy Hollow New Review (Theater and Comedy) The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Fridays-Sundays. Continues through Oct. 30 2011

Brian Pastor and Stephen Murray supply an emotionally tepid, intellectually muddled adaptation of Washington Irving's classic Halloween tale. Pastor narrates Ichabod Crane's run-in with the Headless Horseman in a gentle, self-deprecating manner that keeps us at arm's length from Crane's two defining qualities: his cringe-worthy dorkiness and his absolute terror when pursued by the Horseman. Three eerily decked-out performers supply the creepiest moments as they lurk at the corners, kicking in musical accompaniment, Foley effects, and occasional bits of dialogue. There's some byplay in which they torment Pastor, forcing him to repeat and relive the tale--but who are they supposed to be? For that matter, who exactly is Pastor playing? If he and Murray have a clear idea in mind, it's lost on me. --Dan Weissmann
