The Legend of the Evil Lake

South Korea's Lee Kwang-hoon scores with this vigorous hybrid (2003), equal parts supernatural chiller, martial arts flick, and historical epic. An empire-building warlord vanquishes the Moon Tribe and consigns its fearsome leader to the bottom of a lake. Centuries later the drowned man's vengeful spirit is awakened by internecine strife in the kingdom. The over-the-top acrobatics and wire work (choreographed by Jet Li collaborator Yuen Tak) rank with those of Woo-ping Yuen's Iron Monkey, though the action is gorier and the special effects simpler. In Korean with subtitles. 92 min.
