The Living Nickelodeon

The University of Iowa Sound Studies Group—a collective consisting of Rick Altman, Corey Creekmur, Ann R. Lamond, and Lauren Rabinovitz—presents four 20-minute programs re-creating the experience of the nickelodeon, an early form of mixed media as well as cinema. The first program consists of films by Thomas Edison and others from the Library of Congress Paper Print Collection; the second consists of recently restored films by Georges Melies and others from the Museum of Modern Art collection, as well as hand-tinted slides; the third consists of sing-along films, including a couple from 1905; and the fourth features songs and slides to accompany early films, including D.W. Griffith's Schneider's Anti-Noise Crusade (1909).
