The Lizzie McGuire Movie

The Disney Channel's tweeny heroine Lizzie McGuire (nubile, irrepressibly sunny Hilary Duff) makes her big-screen debut with this romantic fantasy set in Rome, where her junior-high class is traveling under the watchful eye of an excitable teacher (Alex Borstein). Charmed by Paolo (Yani Gellman), the male half of an Italian teen-pop duo, Lizzie feigns illness and sneaks off with him, but he turns out to be a user (Terri Minsky, who created McGuire, also writes for Sex and the City). Director Jim Fall smoothly paces the action while staying true to the girlie thrills (luxury hotels, scenic jaunts, a fashion makeover), delivering an empty-headed but enjoyable romp. 90 min.
