The Lockout: A Musical Agenda Closing (Theater and Galleries) The Short List (Theater)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through Sept. 15 2013

Someone has yet to write a requiem for Derrick Rose's ACL, but Ben Fort and Ballerball.com cofounder Jason Gallagher have managed to chronicle the recent NBA lockout through song. The idea seems less unique the longer this two-hour-plus performance goes on. Casting is a slam-dunk, though. Doug Reed is a bright spot as NBA commissioner David Stern, with a New York accent and Dr. Evil laugh; Ben Harpe and Patrick Poulin—as owner Phil Goodman and player Macon Jones—sing skillfully about their "budding bromance." But catchy songs give way to lethargic dialogue and boilerplate Moneyball references. If Fort and Gallagher tighten the playbook and stick to the 24-second shot clock, this material might make it to the postseason. —Marissa Oberlander
