The Long Walk for Water Closing (Theater and Galleries) Member Picks The Short List (Theater)

When: Fridays-Sundays. Continues through July 14 2013

Linda Sue Park's slim 2010 novel A Long Walk to Water recounts dual Sudanese narratives set years apart. In 1985, 11-year-old Salva begins his flight from an armed militia; in 2008, 11-year-old Nya sets off on her daily trip to retrieve water for her family. Park's simple, repetitive book, seemingly aimed at sixth graders with no imagination, reduces both lives to a string of topic sentences. So does Jerry Miller's overly faithful stage adaptation. As Salva and Nya, Patrick Agada and Nicole Michelle Haskins rise far above this reductive material, but the rest of the cast struggle to find solid footing. Dorie Ellzey Blesoff's perfunctory songs mostly restate the obvious. —Justin Hayford
