The Longest Day

According to Hollywood legend, Darryl F. Zanuck's 1963 re-creation of the Normandy invasion was more expensive than the original assault. Some of that money should have gone toward a coherent screenplay; the film is told entirely in brief, unrelated vignettes that make the day seem even longer. Three directors—Ken Annakin, Andrew Marton, and Bernhard Wicki—labored on it; five writers—including Cornelius Ryan, Romain Gary, and James Jones—contributed to the script; and the cast includes most of the acting population of two continents, from Fabian to Jean-Louis Barrault. John Wayne, Robert Mitchum, Henry Fonda, and Robert Ryan are the nominal stars. 180 min.
