Film festival programmer Mike Plante has been buying people lunches in return for a film that's supposed to cost the same as the lunch and follow predetermined rules. These 17 results include Nina Menkes's $42.19 (2006), in which a woman flees explosions in a haunting single-shot evocation of war. Roger Beebe's $32.37 (TB TX Dance) (2006) is a striking semiabstract video that evokes Peter Kubelka's “metric” films. James Benning's lovely $74.78 (2005) offers all the shots of his Ten Skies in a fast montage. Too many others—like Elizabeth Skadden's $23.16 (Diamond Dave), in which a 50s singer tells us how much he loves his house—are of little interest. 73 min.
