The Magic Blade

Chu Yuan was one of the most reliable directors at Hong Kong's Shaw Brothers studio, and this 1976 feature ranks among his finest films. Adapted from a popular novel by Gu Long, whose work inspired numerous martial-arts classics, it stars the formidable Lo Lieh and the charismatic Ti Lung as rival swordsmen who put aside their differences to band together against an elusive warlord. Fluidly shot by Huang Chien, the action is appropriately dazzling. In Mandarin with subtitles. 101 min.
