The Maids

Christopher Miles's unstable, radically oblique visuals go a long way toward capturing the confusion of sexual and class hatreds in Jean Genet's play—though Glenda Jackson and Susannah York always seem to be competing for our attention. This 1975 feature is one of the better American Film Theatre presentations, with top honors going to Jackson for an exhausting performance that requires her to maintain one monologue for nearly the entire second act. An opulent production, with splendid support from Vivien Merchant. 95 min.
