When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through Feb. 9 2014

In Niccolo Machiavelli's brilliant comedy, written around 1518, an amorous Florentine aims to sleep with his elderly neighbor's virtuous young wife, enlisting the help of a dimwitted servant, a wily go-between, and a gleefully corrupt priest. They're all such thorough Machiavellians that they even get the old guy to think his cuckolding is for his own good. As you'd expect from the author of The Prince, every minute of the play is filled with manipulation, deceit, and perverse rhetoric. Commedia Beauregard's production feels remarkably contemporary, thanks to a fresh and funny new translation by Christopher Kidder-Mostrom and a handful of cheeky original songs by Brian Torosian. The cast's excellent comic timing ensures that Lisa Cantwell's staging is freewheeling without descending into chaos. —Zac Thompson
