The Mark of Zorro | Chicago Reader

The Mark of Zorro

Johnston McCulley's masked pulp-fiction hero was barely a year old when Douglas Fairbanks brought him to the screen in this silent 1920 swashbuckler, which was decisively topped two decades later by Rouben Mamoulian's 20th Century-Fox remake with Tyrone Power. Fairbanks cuts a jolly and dashing figure as Zorro, but Power would have a lot more languid fun with the bandit's foppish alter ego, Don Diego Vega. Fred Niblo directed; with Noah Beery.
