The Mating Season

Mitchell Leisen is known for his glossy 30s comedies—films like Midnight and Hands Across the Table—but he could also function creditably in other contexts, such as the light social satire provided by this 1951 film. John Lund is the working-class boy who marries a debutante (Gene Tierney); all goes well until his proletarian mom (Thelma Ritter) shows up to visit the newlyweds, and is promptly shown to the maid's quarters. Leisen allows some real feelings of bitterness and embarrassment to puncture the frothy surface. With Miriam Hopkins, Jan Sterling, and Larry Keating.
