The Meatlocker The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Fridays, Saturdays. Continues through May 14 2010

An undefeated boxer--nicknamed the Meatlocker because of his abnormally low body temperature--winds up on skid row, and a couple of thugs decide they can make a lot of money by having him take a dive. Trouble is, the champ can't shake the ghost of the nasty old coot who raised him to believe that he'll die if he stays down for a full count. This final play in Bob Fisher's "Noir Triptych" for the Mammals shares several qualities with the previous installments--characters fleeing the past, stylized delirium, a hint of the supernatural--but it's also more straightforwardly told. The gain in accessibility is offset by the loss of some of the mystery and menace that made the other plays so compellingly weird. --Zac Thompson
