The Meeting/Sisters New Review (Theater and Comedy) The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries) Brief Run (Theater)

When: Aug. 2-4 2013

The inaugural offerings from Cape Coast Dreams Theatre reveal where artistic director La'ren Vernea needs to focus her energies if her troupe is to flourish in a town already overrun with storefront companies: First, she's got to pick better plays. Jeff Stetson's The Meeting, about a fictional encounter between Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr., and Marsha Jackson's Sisters, about two African-American women holed up in an office building during a snowstorm, are stagey and reductive. Second, she needs to draw more accomplished actors; both current casts are, for the most part, too tentative and awkward to make their characters ring true. The lone exception is Vernea herself, who plays cleaning woman Cassie in Sisters with a savvy mix of cynicism, vulnerability, and wisdom. —Justin Hayford
