Some fans of post-everything punks the Men were taken aback by the alt-country twang that cropped up on a few songs from last year’s Open Your Heart—it was quite the departure from the bombastic combo of no wave, noise rock, hardcore, and heavy psych on their previous album, Leave Home. But on the recent New Moon (Sacred Bones) the genre-hopping Brooklyn band, now a five-piece, doubles down on that experiment: it’s very nearly a straight-up country record, with jangly acoustic guitars, honky-tonk piano, and wailing harmonica. —Luca Cimarusti, 2013
