The Messenger

Exploring sexual politics is clearly a priority for director Luc Besson—right after creating spectacle. He and Andrew Birkin wrote the pandering, adolescent screenplay for this pseudosubversive hagiography, and nearly every scene screams out its sensationalist intent, though few actually achieve the status of spectacle. All the trite and incoherent analogizing of religious rapture and repressed sexuality forces Milla Jovovich as the 15th-century saint—an iconic babe whose burning at the stake only makes her hotter—to do a lot of heavy breathing. 160 min.
