The Millionairess Closing (Theater and Galleries) The Short List (Theater)

When: Oct. 13-Nov. 5 2012

George Bernard Shaw's 1936 hybrid of screwball farce, comedy of manners, and didactic satire concerns a willful, eccentric English heiress who sets out to prove she can earn her own living—an endeavor that exposes the social and legal inequities of unfettered capitalism. Contrived plotting undercuts Shaw's social commentary, but his literate, impeccably sculpted witticisms are a treat for the ear. Performed readers' theater-style, with the actors delivering their lines script-in-hand at music stands, Robert Scogin's staging for ShawChicago sounds terrific. —Albert Williams
