The Miracle Worker Closing (Theater and Galleries) Recommended The Short List (Theater)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through Oct. 4 2009

Megan Wells's moving, relatively unsentimental production of William Gibson's 1959 chestnut, about Helen Keller and her miraculous teacher Annie Sullivan, is proof of the old adage that casting is 80 percent of the battle. Led by Zia Okocha, who delivers a focused, forceful performance as Sullivan, and young, spirited Alex Griffin as Keller, the ensemble remains tight throughout. Brian Rabinowitz and Jocelyn Mills deserve special note for their subtle work as Keller's guilt-ridden parents. It doesn't hurt that they're performing in the Village Players' incredibly intimate black-box space, where the smallest gestures create maximum dramatic impact. --Jack Helbig
