The Mod Squad

An exercise in robotic filmmaking involving three young LA criminals (Claire Danes, Giovanni Ribisi, Omar Epps) enlisted by a police captain (Dennis Farina) to work as undercover agents. Director Scott Silver and his cowriters, Stephen Kay and Kate Lanier, make the proceedings minimally bearable by emphasizing the vulnerability of Danes and Ribisi and trying to use Michael Lerner's weirdo kingpin as a refugee from a David Lynch nightmare. But nothing can save this movie. Coproduced by Aaron Spelling and based on his late-60s TV series of the same name, which I never saw.
