Jill (Susie Porter), a private detective in Sydney, does everything a man would in her shoes, delivering lots of anguished voice-over while using the have-sex-with-a-key-witness method to investigate a murder. But this neonoir doesn't revise genre conventions, it just parodies them. The dead girl, a university student and underground poet, comes from the suburbs, which supposedly explains why she fell in with a bad crowd in the city. The kinky poets and professors who claim to know nothing about what happened are part of a satire of things academic and edgy that wants to be understated but is way over the top. Samantha Lang directed a screenplay by Annie Kennedy, based on a verse novel by Dorothy Porter. 91 min.
