The Moontrap

A documentary of extraordinary beauty and immediacy, Pierre Perrault's 1963 film is centered on the extended Tremblay family, residents of a small island in the Saint Lawrence Seaway; under Perrault's direction, they re-create the hunting rites that had once been their ancestors' livelihood, erecting a trap of tall wooden poles to capture a beluga whale. The film was the first of three Perrault made with the Tremblays, for a series that stands as one of the form's most commanding achievements.
