Adapted from a 2006 novel by Willy Vlautin, this independent drama effectively captures the spirit of much contemporary fiction: the tone is at once precious and stark, and the narrative drifts from one episode to another (and from realism to fantasy) as though it were playing out in a dream. Emile Hirsch and Stephen Dorff play inseparable brothers who've lived on the margins of Reno, Nevada, since childhood. They're depressive fuck-ups by their own admission, yet their flights of imagination suggest that they might have grown up to be successful artists if things had worked out differently. Alan and Gabe Polsky directed a script by Micah Fitzerman-Blue and Noah Harpster; with Dakota Fanning, Joshua Leonard, and Kris Kristofferson.
