The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor

A brisk opening sequence, with Jet Li as an ancient Chinese warlord and Michelle Yeoh as the witch who curses him, gave me hope for this third installment in the fading franchise (following The Mummy in 1999 and The Mummy Returns in 2001). But for a movie about the undead, this lacks any supernatural chills, and by the time its obligatory final showdown arrives, it seems as hollow as the terra-cotta soldiers brought to life by CGI. Brendan Fraser returns as explorer Rick O'Connell, Maria Bello is miscast as his wife (replacing Rachel Weisz), and Luke Ford is a nonstarter as their rebellious son. John Hannah plays Bello's brother, who tags along on their adventure; his big comic moment comes when a yak pukes on him. Rob Cohen directed, incoherently. PG-13, 112 min.
