The Nativity The Short List (Theater) Recommended Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through Dec. 31 2010

Congo Square Theatre Company has chosen a new adaptation for this 11th annual staging of Langston Hughes's Afro-centric take on the Christmas story. But the fervor remains strong, and so do the voices in director Aaron Todd Douglas's energetic ensemble. As in earlier productions, Joseph and Mary are represented as silent dancers, enacting teen anguish and religious ecstasy with grace and vigor. McKinley Johnson's script has a bit of narrative padding, but also a lot of unexpected humor--including digs at rapacious bankers. And the songs--a combination of originals and new arrangements by composer/musical director Jaret Landon--deliver soul-stirring power. Alexis Rogers's rendition of "O Holy Night" may be the best I've ever heard. --Kerry Reid
