To the editor,

I write to thank you for including Duke's Bar in Rogers Park among your recommended neighborhood taverns in the recent "Chicago 101" issue ["The Neighborhood Tavern," September 22]. However, it is evident that the author of the article hasn't set foot in Duke's in more than a year. The bar has been under new ownership (my own) since September 2005. In that time many changes have occurred. It is no longer "dank to the point of being fetid" and boasts a new paint job, pleasant lighting, and a clientele that reflects the changing face of the neighborhood. New area residents mix with the old-timers, who now have a nicer, cleaner place to tell their stories and drink their shots. Friday, Saturday, and Sunday some of Chicago's best musicians perform in the revamped side room, which still retains its dartboard. I encourage your readers to come and check out the new Duke's, but for the right reasons. Thanks.

My impression of Duke's was formed over many visits, the last of which was a month and a half ago.
