In spite of some op-art flourishes that remind you of director Clive Donner's brief brilliance in the mid-60s (What's New, Pussycat?, Nothing but the Best), this gloss on the old Get Smart TV series is mostly tired blood. A few of the one-liners are snappy and clever, but the project sinks under an overelaborated superciliousness. Donner can't inject any stylistic life, and the poor quality of the postsynchronization gives the film a cheap tone, despite the obvious expansiveness of the sets. I sort of enjoyed it, but it's thoroughly bankrupt filmmaking. With Don Adams, Vittorio Gassman, Andrea Howard, Sylvia Kristel, and Rhonda Fleming (1980).
