The Omen

Rated R 110 minutes 2006

The most commercially successful of the early Exorcist knockoffs, The Omen (1976) launched its own franchise with the tale of an American diplomat and his wife (Gregory Peck and Lee Remick) whose adopted son turns out to be Satan's spawn. This new version is an almost scene-for-scene remake, which is good news in the first half and bad in the torpid second. As the unsuspecting parents, Liev Schreiber and Julia Stiles can't fill their predecessors' shoes, but Seamus Davey-Fitzpatrick is much creepier as little Damien and Mia Farrow is a perpetual delight as Mrs. Baylock, the literal nanny from hell. John Moore (Flight of the Phoenix) directed; with David Thewlis, Pete Postlethwaite, and Michael Gambon. R, 105 min.
