The Only Son

Released in 1936, Yasujiro Ozu's first sound film is a small gem exploring the subtle but devastating disappointments that can arise between parents and their grown children. Chouko Iida plays a poor widow who sacrifices everything she owns to pay for her son's education, then years later visits him to find her hopes for him destroyed. This is a spare precursor to Ozu's masterful Tokyo Story, but it's no less affecting or poetic thanks to his deceptively simple directorial style. In Japanese with subtitles. 103 min.
