Like a comic book translated into Latin, this gray and lethargic horror movie tries to dignify its vacuous story by draping it in the somber vestments of the Catholic faith. A New York priest (Heath Ledger) travels to Rome to investigate the mysterious death of his mentor and falls under the spell of a “sin eater” (Benno Fürmann), an immortal being who grants absolution to the excommunicated at death. Devout Catholics will be appalled; everyone else will be asleep. Brian Helgeland (A Knight's Tale) wrote, produced, and directed; with Peter Weller. 102 min.
