The Outgoing Tide Recommended Member Picks The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Tuesdays-Sundays. Continues through July 3 2011

I briefly worried about finding stagnant sentimentality a la On Golden Pond in Bruce Graham's new play about a domineering patriarch and his long-suffering wife and son. What I got instead is a resonant portrait of a family facing end-of-life dilemmas and old regrets with honesty and wit. John Mahoney flows convincingly between the painful confusion of encroaching senility and peppery defiance as the patriarch, Gunner; his stellar performance is well matched by Rondi Reed as Gunner's loving-but-steely wife, Peg, and Thomas Cox as Jack, the grown son suffering his own defeats at life's hands. After the hysteria over death panels, it's a relief to find a play that deals intelligently with those who embrace the dying of the light on their own terms. --Kerry Reid
