The Page Turner

In the opening sequence of this tepid French thriller (2006), a ten-year-old piano student blows a conservatory audition when one of the judges (Catherine Frot) disrupts her performance to sign an autograph; a decade later the victim (Deborah Francois), grown bitter, insinuates herself into the woman's household unrecognized and plots to get even. This premise may sound all right on paper, but on-screen it doesn't really wash: if the girl had been half as committed to music as she now is to revenge, she would have overcome her early setback. Writer-director Denis Descourt also plays around with the idea that the older woman is romantically drawn to the younger, and though Frot gives a quietly turbulent performance, Francois is such a cipher that this idea doesn't come off either. In French with subtitles. 85 min.
