The Paradine Case

Alfred Hitchcock's 1947 courtroom drama attempts some interesting things with its story of a defense lawyer (Gregory Peck) who falls in love with his client (Alida Valli)—a nymphomaniac and possibly a murderess. But its passionate fusion of sex and death is severely weakened by a cold-fish cast (Ann Todd and Louis Jourdan, in addition to the above), redeemed only by the insidious presence of Charles Laughton as a lustful judge. Ultimately unsuccessful, the film is nevertheless a fascinating first draft for Vertigo.
