The People's Four Seasons Recommended Member Picks Free The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Fridays-Sundays. Continues through March 27 2011

Quest Theatre Ensemble's pageant, in which an old man looks back on the seasons of his life, has weaknesses that would sink any other production: wooden dialogue, clunky performances, ho-hum tunes, and a complete disregard for the show-don't-tell rule. But two major strengths outweigh all the faults. The first is an unflinching embrace of death and loss as central elements of life. Even in the spring and summer episodes, we see plenty of papier-mache animals preying on one another, and fall and winter don't stint on decay and sorrow. The second strength is an endearingly absolute earnestness. The large cast's warm and unstinting belief in the gift they're offering (the show is free) won me over. Also, some of those papier-mache animals are gorgeous. --Dan Weissmann
