The People's Passion Play Closing (Theater and Galleries) Free The Short List (Theater)

When: Fridays-Sundays. Continues through March 31 2013

In its press release, Quest Theatre Ensemble says this musical chronicles "key Biblical events." In fact—aside from Jesus's passion and resurrection, of course—playwright Andrew Park covers only the creation, Cain and Abel, Abraham's near sacrifice of Isaac, and Moses, glossing over everything else. That makes for a specious and distorted vision of things—especially when Park injects liberal ideology into the song lyrics and dialogue. Yet despite its fundamental shortcomings, the show has its up sides. Scott Lamps's music is pretty good if never catchy, and the puppets by Nick Rupard and Luke Verkamp are fascinatingly odd—a collection of oversize, humorous or frightening variations on the famous face in Edvard Munch's The Scream. —Tal Rosenberg
