Four-time Pulitzer Prize winner Robert Sherwood penned this 1935 drama, which was adapted the following year into a classic film starring Leslie Howard, Bette Davis, and Humphrey Bogart. Cooped up slinging burgers in her father's desert service station, young Gabbie has a chance encounter with a cultivated stranger before notorious killer Duke Mantee shows up and takes them hostage along with everyone else present. Today Sherwood's political allegory—celebrating and skewering America's fetish with individualism—is about as subtle as a pistol whip to the head. But in Shade Murray's slick, darkly comic noir production, that's part of the fun. Murray and company give a stylistic nod to Hollywood's golden era, adding a sense of tribute to all the cheeky suspense. —Dan Jakes
