The Pirates of Penzance Closing (Theater and Galleries) Recommended The Short List (Theater)

When: Saturdays. Continues through July 13 2013

Staging a full comic opera on the open deck of a sailboat presents a few logistical hurdles: hapless sightseers wandering on from Navy Pier, speedboats zipping by, the weather. Add the sure knowledge that there's no escape except to swim for it, and tension mounts in the awkward minutes between casting off and the start of the show. But then, with the sun setting behind the skyline, the melody of the opening number begins dancing in time with the swell of Lake Michigan, and—if you don't get nauseous from either sailing or Gilbert and Sullivan—the effect is magical. Emma Couling and Jessie Mutz codirect a cast ranging from competent to fairly talented. Orion Couling's glee at playing the Pirate King is scarcely contained, but quickly contagious. —Keith Griffith
