The Pocket: The DC Go-Go Movement

Michael Cahill and Nicholas Shumaker's 2002 video documentary is an efficient primer on go-go, a percussion-heavy subgenre of funk that sustains a $10-million-a-year industry in the District of Columbia but has never caught fire anywhere else. There's a lot more talk than music, but go-go is such a fascinating cultural phenomenon that I didn't much care. Cahill and Shumaker examine the social, racial, economic, and formal factors that have isolated the music, which is primarily a live experience, ill suited to the commercial constraints of corporate radio. 90 min.
