The Ralph Stanley Story

Bluegrass legend Ralph Stanley has been singing and playing banjo for over 50 years, first in a seminal duo with his brother Carter and then, following Carter's untimely death in 1966, with their backing band the Clinch Mountain Boys. Herb E. Smith's 2000 video documentary shows Stanley in concert, in old home movies, and at home with his family, and while the chatty interviews don't reveal much, the interlacing of Stanley's music with seemingly trivial incidents (about to receive an award, he deflects attention from himself by asking the presenter if he's been eating onions) captures the singer's fine, unpretentious spirit. 81 min.
